RiverLife Weekly #41: Our Focus In RL30
RiverLife is turning 30 this year! We are entering a significant milestone of adulthood, and it is appropriate to inspect our foundations as we come of age. There will be areas to reinforce, renovate or rebuild for the next 30 years.
Last week, our Elders Board Chairman, Ee Yang wrote on our posture for RL30. Today, I write on our RL30 focus.
RiverLife is a side door church (rlc.sg/wb2019). In 2020, we focused on cell groups with emphasis on Area groupings, and we introduced our Disciple Making Road Map (rlc.sg/wb2020). But 2020 turned out very differently! Cast into a decentralised environment, we are so thankful most of our cell groups are getting healthier.
On Vision Sunday, I spoke about building our lives on the foundation of Christ from Luke 6:46-49. In this parable, Christ paints a picture of genuine disciples. In fact, He calls us to make disciples of all nations and Scripture also paints the picture of a multi-generational discipleship process. Raising godly generations is a command, a calling, and a culture. The starting point of making disciples is being a disciple.
I believe this season is about building and strengthening the foundations of disciple making for RiverLife. We are shifting from building cell groups to making disciples in cell groups. Disciple making communities share two facets. First, we are making new disciples. Second, we are nurturing the spiritual formation of every disciple.
How do we build this into our homes and cell groups? Here are three key aspects of our 2021 ministry year.
1. A renewed heart for a life more and more like Christ.
Spiritual growth is the daily pursuit of Christ – to hear His voice through His Word, abide in Him through prayer and to belong to God’s body. Together as a church, look forward to walking through the book Crazy Love as we engage in what discipleship means practically.
2. A renewed heart for those who don’t know Christ.
Reach out in love to those who don’t know Christ – people in our workplace or school, and neighbours across our corridors. Serve the poor. Sow into people’s lives as we have the opportunity. The Holy Spirit will give us words.
3. RL30 projects
We are just beginning to resume in-person worship services for 250 persons across our church. Hence, we will share more on RL30 special projects after Easter. All that is happening in 2021 is set in a hybrid environment of in-person and online gatherings.
Our hope and prayer for 2021 is to help you and your loved ones become stronger disciples, and our context is RL30.
